### Responsibilities

 

The assistant nurse manager will be a direct caregiver, care coordinator, educator, advocate, and consultant. The incumbent reviews completion of patient education including preventive care, health management, pain control, depression/suicide, diagnosis specific information, post-operative management; discharge planning, post hospitalization resources, community resources, and taking medications responsibly. He/she acts in role of unit level leader and change agent. The incumbent serves as a member of an Ad Hoc nursing committee or workgroup or organizational committee or workgroup. The incumbent is responsible for contributing to the establishment and implementation of evidenced-based nursing standards of practice.

 

The incumbent's role as an assistant nurse manager includes but is not limited to:

 

 

 

* Facilitates appropriate staffing levels for each of the identified three shifts; reviewing the schedule for appropriate skill mix and competence.

 

 

 

* Reports variances in staffing to the Nurse Manager prior to posting.

 

 

 

* Augments medical ? surgical staff as required.

 

 

 

* Completes all training and competency requirements within identified timeframes.

 

 

 

* Ability to set up or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as applicable and be certified annually on the specific equipment for which they are responsible.

 

 

 

* Must familiarize self with how their activities impact VA's goals to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources.

 

 

 

* Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others.

 

 

 

* Demonstrates a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and creative approaches to management of complex care.

 

 

 

* Applies skills necessary to identify, coordinate, and/or identify discipline-specific education. Provide training in leadership, professional staff development and emerging needs, to all levels of critical care staff.

 

 

 

* Acts as the Nurse Manager during times of Nurse Manager absence.

 

 

 

* Responsible as nurse supervisor and provides oversight for the administration of leave, counseling and disciplinary actions in collaboration with the Nurse Manager.

 

**Work Schedule/Tour of Duty**: M-F, 0730-1600 with flexibility to work varied shifts and alternating shifts as required by organizational operations.

Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of experience, an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and no experience; or a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) and no experience.

 

Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of experience, or an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of experience; or a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of experience, or a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no experience.

 

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years' experience or a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years' experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience.

 

Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years' experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years' experience.

### Qualifications

 

**BASIC REQUIREMENTS:**

 

* U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

* Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.

* The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

* Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.

**Grade Determinations: **The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:

 

* Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.

* Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; **OR** an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; **OR** a Bachelor?s of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
