### Responsibilities

 

The position functions as an Ophthalmology Technician (OT) to support patient care in the Outpatient Clinic, Operating Room and Inpatient Unit setting of the Ophthalmology Surgical Department. The OT will work alongside the ophthalmologist as they help patients with eye disorders (i.e. Retina, Glaucoma and Cataract), vision measurements for glasses or contact lens, eye muscle exercises and the prevention of blindness. The OT functions as a member of an Outpatient/Inpatient Clinical Practice Team with responsibility for performing a variety of duties in support of the administrative and clinical operations of the Ophthalmology practice. Duties include, but are not limited to:

 

* Responsible for a wide variety of duties that requires the ability to interact with patients, surgical staff, and other internal services

* Experienced in taking comprehensive medical history and document findings in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS)

* Performs preliminary screening examinations for physician review including central and peripheral visual field tests; ocular motility tests; color vision tests; pharmacological pupil tests; tonometry, tonography and tensilon tonography tests to determine intraocular pressure and pupil testing for size, equality and reaction prior to dilation

* Assists with ophthalmic surgical procedures and prepares pre-operative and post-operative patients

* Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments, applies ocular dressings, performs suture removal, and obtains eye cultures

* Knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment, opthalmic injectable medications, anesthetic solutions, and ocular disorders

**Specialized Experience:**** **Applicants must have One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade (GS-5) in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Applying basic knowledge of medical terminology, Ocular anatomy; ophthalmic medications; visual physiology, optics; use and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment; ophthalmic and medical instructions; medical terminology; ophthalmic technology; asepsis; ocular referrals and emergency medical treatment; patient transportation; medical ethics; medical administration; and medical service organization and function; knowledge of surgical instruments and equipment, ophthalmic injectable medications, anesthetic solutions, and ocular disorders.

**Substitution of Education for Experience:****(Transcript Required)**: Successfully completed six months of graduate education (9 Semester Hours) or an internship meets the specialized experience required **only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position.**
